Vivian P. Ta-Johnson, PhD
Assistant Professor of Psychology
The University of Texas at San Antonio
I am the Principal Investigator of the Language & Social Dynamics Lab at The University of Texas at San Antonio. We use natural language processing (NLP) to investigate social psychological processes across multiple areas including policing, mental health, diplomacy, persuasion, and others.
In my primary research, I use NLP to examine performance, decision-making, and mental health among first responders. My current projects focus on evaluating police use-of-force training, and body-worn camera footage of police-community encounters to improve law enforcement training, practice, and outcomes. I also examine occupational stress and well-being among emergency call takers and dispatchers with the broader goal of developing scalable, data-driven approaches to support first responder resilience and effectiveness.
A common theme throughout my work is promoting NLP methods to study social psychological processes that are challenging to study with traditional research methods.
I also study human-chatbot interactions in a smaller line of research.
